My Story
Not long ago, I was stressed out, overworked, and over committed, running three businesses from my home, active in my church and my community, and raising my two kids.
My stress got so bad, it landed me in the hospital--they thought I was having a HEART ATTACK!
Fortunately, I was able to completely turn my life around, and now I am committed to helping others do the same by choosing joy, creating wealth,and living life by design. Stephen Hopson, The World’s First Deaf Instrument Rated Pilot

Lesson 6b: Living with Intent
When I wrote down my goals last time, I thought it was the last part of the lesson. Oops--it wasn't! There are two pages afterwards talking about taking action toward accomplishing our goals and having the expectation that we will achieve them.
This notion of expectation is something that I have struggled with ever since I started my personal development path. Having an expectation of success is even one of the 5 elements of success in Liberty League. But it always seemed that there was so much evidence of times when something "unexpected" happened or when I was disappointed because my expectations weren't met, that I had a hard time really believing that everything in life happens exactly as we expect it to.
Then, on Friday, a really remarkable thing happened.
I was reading a report called "The 5-Minute Mind Miracle" by Nathan Blaszak--an expert on hypnosis and training your mind for success. The article was about meditation techniques, but for whatever reason he included in it a little section on the magic of "what if." He said that many people get bogged down with trying to figure out "why" things aren't going right in their lives. Instead, he suggests asking the question, "What if?"
Although he was primarily referring to asking others this question, a little spark went off in my brain, which turned into a huge fire.
You see, all of the techniques of personal development--affirmations, visualizations, etc.--have one thing in common: to get you to raise your vibration so that you are in a constant state of joy. When you feel good, good things happen.
The problem is that we all have this pesky little conscious mind that is always trying to put the breaks on what we are trying to tell ourselves:
"I am smart, attractive, and funny," we say in our affirmation.
"No, you're not. Look how stupid you were yesterday, you haven't had a date in a month, and no one ever laughs at your jokes," replies our conscious.
Loral Langemeier, in her appearance in the movie, The Secret, describes this little mini-battle and says we can expect it to go on "for awhile."
Bob Doyle, another teacher of The Secret, commonly writes and talks about what he refers to as the missing ingredient in the The Secret--learning to deal with the resistance that comes from your conscious mind.
As I have tried to overcome my own personal resistance--the voices in my head that tell me what I am trying to convince myself of is not true--I have turned to teachers like Carol Look and Stuart Lichtman, who teach you how to stop the voices (Carol,using EFT) or speak to your subconscious in a way that bypasses them (Stuart, using Cybernetic Transposition).
Everything showed promise but has been time consuming and overwhelming. Everything, that is, until I picked up Nathan's little "what if" secret.
You see, when I ask myself "what if," my conscious mind has to take a backseat. The very question requires that I not look for a realistic response. It draws on the powers that could be, instead of looking for evidence of what really is.
So Friday I began an amazing, exciting, powerful journey of "what if," and my life will never be the same. In fact, it was SO powerful and SO remarkable, that I had to write down all the seemingly unbelievable things that happened.
- I went to the bank and suddenly realized it was Friday afternoon. How stupid! Friday afternoon is the worst time to go--it's always really packed and you have to wait forever. Instead of thinking that, though, I pulled into the parking lot and thought, "What if there is hardly anyone in line and I get to the teller right away?" I walked in, and there were only 3 other people in line.
- While I was in the bank, I got a paper cut--you know how paper cuts really hurt, even though they are so small, and they just bug you all day. Instead of thinking that, though, I instantly thought, "What if this paper cut doesn't hurt and hardly bleeds?" It didn't.
- Next I went to go buy a bike for my triathlon. I wanted to buy a used one at Salvation Army because I don't know if I'm really going to stick with the sport. Usually they have a ton of bikes, but due to the nature of the store, it's hit and miss as to whether you get a good one. On my way there I thought, "What if I went and found exactly the one I wanted and paid exactly what I wanted to for it?" As I pulled into the parking lot, I saw that they only had a handful of bikes there (turns out there were 4--not the 20 or so they usually have), so I changed my thought to, "What if, despite the fact that are only a few bikes, the right one is still there? And what if some good person felt like donating a really expensive bike, instead of reselling it themselves?" Out of only 4 to choose from, I found the perfect bike--worth about $500 (and I paid $60).
- Next I went to get my accessories (helmet, bike rack, tool kit, etc.). I was worried that it was going to cost an arm and a leg. But as I was driving to the store, I thought, "What if I walked in the store and found that everything was on sale, and I got deep discounts on almost everything I wanted to buy?" I walked in the store and they were having a "lowest prices of the season sale"--almost everything I needed was 40-50% off!
- Now that I had my bike rack, I had to go back to pick up my bike. The tiny parking lot was full, so I thought, "What someone leaves just as I get there and I get a spot right in front?" I got the spot.
- Now that I had my bike, I had to go back to the accessory store to get the right innertube. I thought, "What if I get a parking spot right in front?" When I arrived, someone was just leaving. It was right in front, but it was a handicapped spot. So I waited, and kept thinking, "What if someone came out of a store and moved their car out of a spot right in front?" Well, someone came out of a store and moved their car--but it was the other handicapped spot! I guess I should have been more specific...ha ha ha! :o)
- Next I had to go to the grocery store. By this time, it was rush hour, and I was on a very busy street that barely moves this time of day. So I thought, "What if, even though there are a lot of cars, they moved quickly and it didn’t seem like we were sitting in traffic at all?" There were a lot of cars, but they moved quickly, and it didn't seem like we were sitting in traffic at all!
- Finally, I had to stop at a friend's house to pick up some music. It wasn't likely that she would be home, but it was on the way, so I decided to stop by anyway. I thought, "What if, not only is she home, but she is expecting me?" Not only was she home, but she answered the door and said, "Hey, I was just thinking about you!"
This has absolutely, positively ROCKED my world. I find I am using it constantly! I am stretching my powers and testing it on bigger and bigger things. Just how powerful am I? What does it work and not work on? Oh my gosh, I cannot wait for the rest of my life!!!!

Lesson 6: Living With Intent
Today's lesson is about designing the life you really want and then stepping into that life.
So many people (myself included) are so busy reacting to what's going on in their lives that they don't stop and look at what they really want. One day they wake up and their life has passed and they have nothing left but empty dreams and unfulfilled wishes.
While I have always been a "driven" person--never stopping until what I got in my head I wanted to do was done--I don't really feel like I was "goal oriented." By that I mean that the challenges I took on were things that were right in front of me. I never looked in the distance, picked something I wanted to do, and then set out to do it. Sure, I had dreams (like being on Broadway), but I always convinced myself that "I couldn't"--I wasn't pretty enough, I wasn't talented enought, etc. No one ever told me these things--I just watched the Tony awards or saw a play and compared myself in my mind.
[Interesting breakthrough on this: I have this "thing" about being told what to do when it's something I already know. For example, I knew I had to clean my room, and I fully intended to do it. But when my mom would ask me to clean it, I would get defensive. This pattern has been played over and over in my life. I am hypercritical of myself so that I can beat someone else to the punch. I decide I can't before someone else tells me I can't. Wow...I need to think about this some more. What can I do to break the pattern?]
This type of mindgame is, perhaps, more damaging than than if someone had actually told me I couldn't.
You see, when someone else tells you something, you can choose whether or not to believe it. It's only when you begin to agree with what has been said--when you tell yourself that you can't--that begin to act and make decisions that reinforce it.
To correct this, you simply tell yourself a new story--whatever you want. The problem for many of us is that we have conditioned ourselves one way for so long that it has become a habit to think a certain way. But, as you know, all habits can be broken and replaced with new habits.
Today's exercise was about creating your story. What do you want to do? How do you want to live? It suggests writing it as a narrative or starting with a list of 101 things you want to do before you die.
The first time I did this exercise, I struggled to come up with 19. Even so, the exercise has absolutely transformed my life--far more than I have time to write about right now.
Here, though, are the things on my list:

1. Complete a triathlon (scheduled for August 16, 2008!)
2. Have a thin, firm, well-toned body that I am happy and comfortable in (on my way!)
3. Get a weekly massage (I think I'm going to start this next week)
4. Get a weekly manicure and pedicure (one of my earlier goals was just to get a pedicure--I did that (for the first time in my life) on May 17, 2007)
5. Fast at True North
6. Visit Regency Health Spa
7. Take dance lessons
8. Attend an NHA Convention
9. Shave my head

10. Visit Cape Cod/Martha's Vineyard
11. Go on a vegetarian cruise

Lesson 5: Be Conscious of Your Consciousness
"Know what is right, and then do it."
This was the theme of one our speakers in church yesterday. He had been asked to talk about his experiences of joining the church, and I believe he said this is something his father used to tell him.
I am always amazed at the congruousness of life--how once you are awakened to the fact that everything in life is connected, you see it everywhere.
Today's lesson, as always, was something I needed to hear. It spoke to exactly what has been going on in my life. On page 6 we read, "We do far too little thinking and way too much doing. Our conscious mind will always have something to keep us occupied. There are a million tasks to divert our attention. There's another thing to do every time you turn around. But take a moment. Stop reacting to the endless bombardment of events and demands and face yourself. Look inside...It's not what you do, but how you think."
There are a million tasks to divert our attention. How true! In fact, it was these million tasks that sent me to the hospital three short years ago.
I still need to be reminded to take time to focus on what is really important and to "stop reacting to the endless bombardment of events and demands." Living stress-free is a choice,and we must choose it every day.
The exercise today is to spend 10 minutes focussing clearly. Take a deep breath. Let go of any tension. Focus on supportive thoughts.
I was grateful that I had already done that this morning. In fact, I have decided to do it every morning, and I will post here what comes up for me. I'm calling it Daily Gratitude.
You see, I realized the other day that I had been doing gratitude all wrong. In my mind, and occasionally on paper, I had been saying, "I am so grateful for this, I am so grateful for that..." But by phrasing it this way, the focus has always been on me. What we should do instead is bring the focus outside of ourselves and acknowledge the hand of the Universe (or God, or Heavenly Father, however you choose to name it) in bringing us all that we desire. So now I am saying "Thank you for this...thank you for that..." I did it for the first time this morning, and it was so powerful.
I also added something that I learned from Stuart Lichtman. Stuart teaches how to effectively communicate with our subconscious mind so that it will bring us precisely what we want. He teaches that we need to reinforce the good things by saying, "Yes, more of that please." That way you are giving positive feedback for the things you have already received and want more of.
As I said, the exercise this morning was so powerful--I am looking forward to doing it every morning!
As it says in Beyond Freedom, "we do far too much thinking and way too much doing." We must stop and think first about what we want to do that will help us achieve our goals. Only then should we act and move toward them.
Or, as our speaker yesterday said, "Know what is right, and then do it."

Thank you for our car--for the technology that brought it into existence, for the money we have to purchase it and keep it running (more like this, please--thank you!), for the freedom it allows us to travel distances much farther than we could walk. Thank you for the gym--for the money that we have to pay for my membership (more like this, please--thank you!) and for the technology that allows indoor swimming pools to exist. Thank you for my parents, who had the money to join the club and pay for swimming lessons. Thank you for all my swimming instructors--including the ones that have written the books and recorded the videos that help me still today. Thank you for my Beyond Freedom, which challenged me to think of all that I wanted to achieve and to start achieving it! Thank you for Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz, who wrote the book that changed my life (The Power of Full Engagement) and gave me the courage to step up and become physically active for the first time ever. Thank you to Tim Kanaley for setting the example and showing me that real people can do triathlons. Thank you for my beautiful children, who are so sweet and loving and supportive (more like this, please--thank you!). Thank you for the inspiration and realization that achieving my own dreams sets the example for my children to achieve theirs. Thank you for the technology that brought the Internet, for all the people that created blogging, for the money to buy this laptop (more like this, please--thank you), for the ability I have to type (including my mind, my vision, and my fingers), and for the inspiration to write in the form of "thank you" rather than "I am grateful." Thank you for Habiba Miller and Carol Look.

She Only Had One Leg
THE STORY
We crossed paths as I was getting out of the pool and she was getting in--pushed in her wheelchair by one of the lifeguards.
It is not unusual to see a senior citizen with mobility challenges at our gym. The pool is frequently used by them for therapeutic purposes.
As we passed each other, I looked kindly on the woman. She had on a black, full length suit, a flipper on her foot, and a smile on her face. She cheerfully directed the guard over to the first swim lane, which was some distance away from the large open swim area, and set down some swimming equipment. I heard her say, "I'll go ahead and use this one."
That was when I realized that she would actually be swimming.
For some odd reason, when I first saw this woman--this woman with only one complete leg and just a stump at the other hip--I assumed that she would be undergoing therapy. I assumed that she would be like so many other senior women I see at the pool taking a class or just wading up and down through the water.
But when she picked an actual swimming lane, I realized she was different.
I could not help but watch as the lifeguard wheeled her into the water just far enough for her get out and hop along the rail into the deeper water. "Hop, hop, hop," she said sweetly to a young toddler who also could not stop watching her.
I do not know whether she was conscious of my eyes following her. I tried to be discreet--looking only when her back was turned and conspicuously drying off and getting on my sweatsuit at the edge of the pool so I would have a reason to stay.
I hoped that if she did catch me she would somehow know that I was not ogling out of morbid curiosity or even sympathy, but out of deep admiration and respect.
She reached the open area and glided effortlessly across it to reach her chosen lane, and there I stopped watching and turned to go.
I had seen what I had been waiting for.
I had seen the woman with only one leg beat the odds and the excuses and the rationalizations and justifications...and become a mermaid.
THE LESSON
There is hardly any force in the Universe more powerful than an excuse. An excuse will hold back the strongest man or woman from conceiving what is possible and achieving what they set out to do. An excuse will convince the greatest among us that we are small and should stay silent. I daresay that an excuse is, at the core, the only thing that lies between us and our goals.
You really can have what you want. But to do so you must eliminate from your mind all the excuses that keep you from it. "I don't have any money." "I'm too old." "I'm too young." "I don't have enough education." "I'm not the right sex." "I'm not the right color." "I have a family." "I'm single." "My kids are too young." I could go on and on.
The fact is that whatever your excuse, there is someone who is successfully doing what you want to do despite that same excuse.
For everyone that thinks they cannot swim, there is a mermaid to prove them wrong.

Too old? Colonel Sanders was 60 before his idea for Kentucky Friend Chicken took off. Too young? Farrah Gray became a millionaire at just 15. No money? Dani Johnson was homeless at 19 with just $2.03 to her name and a millionaire at 21 (oh, and she didn't graduate from high school, either). Got cancer? What better example is there than Lance Armstrong?
Remember, if even one person has done it, you can, too. And if no one has done it, you can be the first.
